Revisant la meva discoteca, o per ser més precisos, la meva "cedeteca", vaig ensopegar amb un disc compacte de Grateful Dead que em deuria comprar als anys '90 del segle passat, ben segur, en alguna Fira del Disc del Col·leccionista que aleshores es celebrava, també a Girona.
El disc és un recull d'algunes de les seves cançons publicades sota el segell de la Warner Bros., amb qui van finalitzar el contracte, que no van renovar, a principis dels anys setanta.
Grateful Dead és un d'aquells grups americans formats a mitjans dels anys '60 que van partir del folk i el country per, a través del rock, seguir fent camí passant pel blues i la psicodèlia.
Liderats per l'incombustible (fins a 1995) Jerry Garcia Grateful Dead va conrear no només un gran nombre de discs, sinó també de bones cançons! Potser no són un grup de grans "hits", però la història de la música es vesteix i basteix precisament de música com la que ens va deixar Grateful Dead.
L'any 1974 Grateful Dead publicava "From The Mars Hotel", el seu setè disc d'estudi i segon sota el seu propi segell, Greatful Dead Records.
La primera cançó de la "cara B" del disc és "Scarlet Begonias", la lletra de la qual va inspirar el nom del grup "Heart of Gold Band" de Keith i Donna Jean Godchaux quan aquests van abandonar el grup.
Tornant a Grateful Dead i al disc que van publicar fa 40 anys observareu que a la portada hi ha unes lletres escrites a l'inrevés i cap per avall; capgirant el disc i veient-lo a través d'un mirall s'hi llegeix "Ugly Rumors", nom que per inspiració d'aquest disc i portada tenia la banda de música de l'ex primer ministre britànic Tony Blair quan estudiava a Oxford...
Quedem-nos però amb Jerry Garcia, Grateful Dead i les "Scarlet Begonias"!

De Grateful Dead trobareu, a YouTube i a Spotify, moltes cançons en directe; també "Scarlet Begonias", com aquest enregistrament de fa 40 anys!
